8th Annual International Conference on Managing Intellectual Property in Universities

“Success Stories: University Owned and/or Partnered Technology Investment Funds”

Once again, we are very happy and proud to announce that the International Conference on “Managing Intellectual Property in Universities” which became a traditional event at Boğaziçi University, will now be organized again with the meritorious contributions and collaborations of Koç University, Middle East Technical University, and starting from this year, we are particularly happy to have a new partner university joining forces with us, namely; Özyeğin University, and this strategic collaboration of the four esteemed research universities of Turkey will continue henceforth on an annual basis.

The aims of these conferences are to raise awareness about intellectual property and to contribute both to the academia and the newly emerging Technology Transfer Ecosystem within the scope of adopted principles of intellectual property. In addition to developing and promoting creativity and inventiveness, the protection of intellectual property rights and commercializing these IPR assets can only be made possible by raising awareness and fostering a sustainable ecosystem. The collaboration of these four Turkish research universities, each of which prioritize to develop academic excellence and a free research environment in the sake of science as a primary objective, as well as to contribute to the society at large by creating an innovative, ecofriendly, more prosperous and happy world with the cooperation of industry/public sector and academia in an adopted sense of social responsibilities, should be a beneficial example for all universities and research institutions in Turkey and the region to act together in order to promote science and social & economic development.

“IP Management @ Universities” (IP2018) international conference will be hosted again at Albert Long Hall, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul this fall on 4th and 5th October, 2018. These conferences are always organized also in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a self-funding agency of the United Nations (UN) with 187 member states; European Patent Organization (EPO), an intergovernmental organization that was set up on the basis of the European Patent Convention (EPC) which serves 38 member states; the Turkish Patent and Trademark Authority (Turk Patent), an independent legal entity of the Turkish Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

This year’s conference will focus on  “Success Stories: University Owned and/or Partnered Technology Investment Funds”, and we are honored to have Ankara Patent,  Department for Transition and Developed Countries (TDC), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), European Investment Fund (EIF), Istanbul Şehir Üniversity TTO and Boğaziçi University Alumni Association Business Angels (BUBA) as unique individual panel sponsors, whereas we are, of course, also very proud to have Özyeğin University, Elginkan FundationODTU-TEKNOKENT, SDT Space & Defence Technologies Inc.,  Destek Patent, Clarivate Analytics, Ford Otosan, Tüpraş, Koç Bilgi ve Savunma Teknolojileri A.Ş., Koç University Research and Project Development Directorate, ALFA Patent Stan Advoka, Magg4, Ulysses Advisory Group, Accelerating The Commercialization of Technology (ACT), GUN + Partners, Yalçıner Patent, Deris, MineSoft, Özden & Güçlü Legal, Vortechs Grup, AIPPI Turkey, AmCham Turkey, FICPI-TurkeyISIF’18 Turkey, LES Turkey, PEM, OPENISME, PATSNAP, BU-TTO and Boğaziçi University Alumni Association (BÜMED) as the main sponsors of our conference.

After Boğaziçi University Rector Prof. Mehmed Özkan’s welcome speech on October 4th, we will be hosting “Sertaç Köksaldı IPR Achievement Award” ceremony for the first time. The four research universities which are the organizers of these IP Conferences have unanimously decided to join their forces with various IPR Firms and NGO’s and corporations (such as AIPPI Turkey, LES Turkey, BUBA, Arçelik, Deris, Ankara Patent and Yalçıner Patent) to kick-start a special annual award to commemorate the very unique contributions of the late Sertaç Köksaldı (Boğaziçi University Industrial Engineering ‘91, Arçelik and Deris) who had always been very supportive and an active participant to all of our previous IP Conferences, and many other sectoral events in the Turkish ecosystem.

Needless-to-say, his sudden departure has left a deep void among us as Sertaç Köksaldı had certainly touched many practitioners and organizations of our field and was a very energetic, participatory and accelerating contributor to our evolving IPR ecosystem.  It was unanimously decided to honor Sertaç Köksaldı’s name with a special annual recognition at IP Conferences by selecting and highlighting a significant achievement in the field of IPR in the Turkish ecosystem in the previous calendar year. This award will be unique to the Turkish market and its aims & nomination process are explained in the related submenu of this website.

Kemal Yamankaradeniz, Chairman of Board, Destek Patent A.Ş. , will commence the “key-note speech” of IP2018.

As it was the case in the previous IP Conferences, the first panel is always devoted to discussing international, regional and national strategies of public institutions on "The Role of TTOs in Enhancing Academic IP Commercialization on International, Regional and National Scale".

This will be followed by regional success stories panels, namely; “UK Best Practices”, “USA Best Practices”, and “Continental Europe Best Practices” panels.

The second and last day of IP2018 will have four panels. Department for Transition and Developed Countries (TDC), World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) will conduct a unique panel as a round-table where experts from the region and individual states will share their feedback on the new WIPO Tookit and Roadmap strategies.   This will be followed by a fifth regional panel on Israeli Success Stories.  Consequently, the least two panels of IP2018 will be the “Legal Panel” where Licensing and Contractual issues will be addressed by global legal experts, and “BUBA Panel on Patent Valuation and Turkish Technology Funds”. The Conference will conclude with the remarks of Prof. Ayşın Baytan Ertüzün, Vice Rector Boğaziçi University.
